Courtyard Flat

A full refurbishment and extension of a ground floor flat in Brockley that adds significant new living space to the property while keeping structural interventions to a minimum.

Location: South-East London
Typology: Residential
Client: Private client
Size: 90 sqm
Scope: Architectural services, RIBA 1-5

The extension is characterised by pitched roofs and shifting planes that reference the form of the Victorian terrace. Materially, the black brick of the extension distinguishes it as a new addition.

The plan makes use of the existing structure to divide spaces, limiting the extent of demolition. The extension creates an external courtyard garden, providing internal spaces with light and offering views onto planting.

Foundations have been designed to drastically reduce embodied carbon, utilising screw piles and a low carbon concrete mix.
