Working with a structural engineer we developed a lightweight structure consisting of a run of laminated timber elements in place of steel to greatly reduce the project’s carbon impact. The structure carries load to the ground in order to minimise load bearing points on the existing house, while the form of the timber columns relates directly to the loads they carry, resulting in an efficient and economical structure.
We proposed using a variety of wood species to reflect the woodland surrounding the house, celebrating the natural material’s grain and tactile qualities.
